The Fall 2026 Issue of Global Black Thought Is Now Available
We are delighted to announce the publication of the Fall 2026 issue (Volume 2, Issue 2) of Global Black Thought! Bringing together original research, intellectual history essays, interviews, a book forum, and reviews, the issue showcases the breadth of Black intellectual traditions and the many ways scholars are expanding our understanding of Black thought across time, geography, and political context.
The issue opens with two illuminating conversations with leading scholars of Black intellectual history: Barbara D. Savage, in “The Global Impact of Black Women’s Intellectual History,” and Carole Boyce Davies, in “Black Women’s Transnational Intellectual Contributions.” Both interviews underscore the global, transnational, and deeply interdisciplinary dimensions of Black women’s intellectual history.
The featured articles offer a rich set of interventions. John Frederick Bell examines education, epistemology, and the discourse of the “Female Talented Tenth,” while Keidrick Roy explores Anna Julia Cooper’s concept of “concrete universalism.” Jaimie D. Crumley turns to Charlotte (“Lottie”) Forten and the nineteenth-century Black feminist project of remembrance, and Vanessa Charlot considers Black women, photography, and the enduring visual echoes of slavery.
The issue also includes a remarkable collection of short essays on Mary Frances Phillips’s groundbreaking new book on Ericka Huggins. Contributors include Lashawn Harris, Joshua Crutchfield, Casey D. Nichols, Yohuru Williams, Zinga A. Fraser, Stefan Bradley, followed by an Author’s Response from Phillips. The forum exemplifies one of the things I value most about Global Black Thought: creating space not simply to review scholarship but to foster substantive intellectual exchange and dialogue among scholars.
The issue concludes with an excellent collection of book reviews, featuring work by Yasmina Martin, David Thomas Suell, Chahrazad Zahi, Taylor Prescott, Ashley Everson, and Kristopher Pourzal. The reviews engage a wide range of recent scholarship on Black global activism, revolutionary politics, African modernism, liberated Africans, Black women’s political consumerism, and Black women in music and performance.
About the Journal
Global Black Thought, which launched in Spring 2025, is the official journal of the African American Intellectual History Society (AAIHS). The journal is devoted to the study of the Black intellectual tradition.
The journal, published by the University of Pennsylvania Press and edited by renowned Brown University historian Keisha N. Blain, features original, innovative, and thoroughly researched essays on Black ideas, theories, and intellectuals in the United States and throughout the African diaspora. Global Black Thought publishes historically based contributions by authors in diverse fields of study throughout the humanities and social sciences. While steeped in historical methodologies, Global Black Thought is an interdisciplinary journal informed by scholarship in Africana studies, feminist theory, and critical race theory.
The journal welcomes submissions that feature original research and innovative methods. We also extend an invitation to scholars working outside the United States. Global Black Thought opens new directions for writers interested in understanding the ideas, theories, and ideologies that undergird Black social and political life. The journal encapsulates the best of scholarly research and innovative methods. Essays highlight the wide range of methods and methodologies, including new approaches and diverse and underutilized primary sources–both traditional and unconventional ones. In addition to well-researched, cutting-edge, and deftly argued essays, each issue of the journal features book reviews as well as interviews with influential Black intellectuals whose research is shaping the field.
